Chard Carers Group Celebrates its 17th Anniversary

On 12th February 2024 Chard Carers Group celebrated its 17th anniversary of supporting unpaid carers in and around the area.

Carers Groups are important because although it’s a satisfying role, caring for someone can often be isolating, leaving carers little time for themselves. As well as being an important source of resources and information, the groups offer a chance to relax and socialise and often result in long-lasting friendships.

Pat Galpin started the group in 2007 and recalls that there were nine people who attended that first session and is delighted that four of the original members still go along to the monthly group, which has grown over the years.

Pat explained, “People who come along to the carers group can get support if they’re having any problems and if we can’t help them, I normally know someone who can. It’s a nice feeling when you see people befriending each other. Running the group is a very rewarding thing to do.”

Alongside the usual chat over a cuppa, a raffle and some helpful tips from a guest speaker about preventing falls, the anniversary celebrations involved flowers, photos, sharing memories and plenty of cake.

Chard Carers Group meets at English Martyrs Church Hall on the 2nd Monday of each month. Contact Pat Galpin for details on 01460 220026
